Cassian Todorova, better known as Cas, is a notorious vigilante and criminal best known for defending magical rights. He captains the Gravestar, either alone or with various crewmates.

Biography

Early Years

Cas's exact homeland is unknown, though he did grow up near the coast and likely relatively near the [name] region that Other Lost Things takes place in. He is canonically transgender, but this transition happened when he was very young and transphobia is nearly nonexistent in this part of the world, so it did not affect his life much. He had a close relationship to his mother and father, but was somewhat othered by his peers and community. Cas attributes this to the magic lying dormant inside of him, suggesting that he and others could sense it even before it properly presented. This estrangement made Cas introspective and observant, but overall his early childhood was not unhappy.

Cas's magic, breath-stealing, presented when he was ten, but he was able to keep it a secret for some time. There were some close calls as he learned to control it due to him accidentally stealing his own air. He practiced by stealing the breath of animals (though he was careful not to kill them) until his parents caught him doing so with a rabbit. Horrified, they took Cas out on the family's sailboat and dumped him into the ocean to drown.

Through swimming skills, magic use, and sheer willpower, Cas successfully swam back to shore instead. The event changed him as a person, and he began to view the ocean simultaneously as his home and a form of hell, and himself as a monster who held dominion over it. He became even more withdrawn and distrustful of others, choosing to live on his own and survive via odd jobs and small favors.

This eventually led him to find a wrecked, abandoned boat, which he named Gravestar, fixed, and learned to sail. With his newfound freedom and honed survival skills, he could focus on larger problems, like the hate and fear that had ruined his and so many others' lives. He began by stealing from anti-magic people and organizations, and quickly escalated to killing. By 14-15, Cas had built a powerful reputation, and the fearful respect was only compounded by the fact that he always worked alone.

When Cas was 16, he met Oleander Eclipse,a 15-year-old shapeshifter, while running from the law in Creulia. Ollie, also on their own and looking for change, as well as having a healthy admiration for Cas, asked to join him. The two were fast friends and partners in crime, continuing to sail the region and dole out their own justice for three years. Six months prior to the beginning of Other Lost Things, they also met Inari Devoras, a 17-year-old with fire magic and a very similar reputation to Cas, who demanded to join the crew for easier travel.

Physical Description

Cas has olive skin and black eyes that are often described as "sharklike." His black hair falls just below his chin, and is fairly ragged and unkempt from his life at sea. Cas prefers to let it hang loose, but will occasionally tie it back in a bun, and is shown once letting Inari braid it for him.

Abilities and equipment

Breath-stealing

Cas has the ability to steal air from other living creatures and himself, and is also able to push that air into small gusts of wind. He can comfortably steal from several people at a time, and up to about twenty at most, though this takes more effort and can't be kept up as long. Cas does use this ability to kill, but he appears to prefer to use it to slow down enemies or torture them, using more physical methods to take them out.

Breath-stealing can also be used in a more helpful manner; Cas is shown to steal air to prevent himself or others from crying out in situations where silence is important, to slow down the heartbeat, and to help those who are hyperventilating or otherwise struggling to breathe on their own. An unfortunate side effect of this power is that its usage takes a toll on Cas's lungs over time, resulting in him developing mild asthma in his teens that continues to worsen with time.
